Microsoft to Purchase 8 Million Carbon Credits from BTG Pactual in Record-Breaking Deal
The forestry management arm of BTG Pactual said on Tuesday, June 18, that it has agreed to sell 8 million carbon credits to Microsoft, marking the largest sale of carbon credits of its kind in history.
BTG Pactual Timberland Investment Group (TIG) did not disclose the financial terms of the agreement. However, according to MSCI Carbon Markets, this is the largest carbon dioxide removal credit transaction publicly known to date.
Carbon credits allow companies to offset part of their greenhouse gas emissions by financing projects that reduce emissions elsewhere. Each credit represents the reduction or removal of one metric tonne of carbon dioxide, and such credits can be used to support corporate climate and net-zero goals.
BTG Pactual TIG said the credits were generated through its forest restoration projects in Latin America, underscoring the growing role of nature-based solutions in large-scale carbon removal strategies.
