Apple Introduces the World’s First Carbon-Neutral Watch, Aiming to Offset 25% of Product Emissions with Carbon Credits
Apple has announced that its new Watch Series 9 has become the first carbon-neutral product in the company’s history, marking a significant milestone on Apple’s path toward its ambitious goal of achieving full carbon neutrality by 2030.
Apple’s carbon-reduction strategy focuses on three key areas: energy, materials, and transportation. The tech giant emphasizes the importance of reducing emissions across these sectors before relying on high-quality, nature-based carbon credits to offset any remaining emissions.
Apple’s journey toward carbon neutrality began more than a decade ago, and the company has since made substantial progress. In 2020, Apple achieved carbon neutrality across its global corporate operations and introduced the Apple 2030 strategy, which aims to reach carbon neutrality—or net-zero emissions—across its entire value chain by 2030.
Achieving carbon-neutral corporate operations included the use of 324,100 metric tons (Mt) of CO₂e in carbon removal credits.
Under its 2030 strategy, Apple plans to reduce total carbon emissions by 75% compared to 2015 levels. To date, the company has already reduced its overall emissions by more than 45%, while increasing revenue by over 65%.
Carbon removal is considered critically important in addressing the climate crisis and achieving global climate goals.
After significantly reducing emissions from its products, Apple will offset remaining emissions using high-quality carbon removal credits, primarily from nature-based projects. These initiatives include forest conservation as well as the restoration of grasslands and wetlands.
For carbon-neutral Apple Watch models, emissions will be offset through forest restoration and protection projects in Paraguay and Brazil, implemented in partnership with Arbaro Advisors and BTG Pactual Timberland Investment Group.
